10 year old daughter cries as first defense

My 10 year old daughter can't seem to control her tears.  She's always cried as a first defense and still does. Generally occurs when she's been scolded or something adverse happens in her day.  NEVER does this at school or with friends.  We allowed her to cry (w/o giving in) but have now begun to try to change that behavior.  It isn't working - even with potential punishment.  Is she just really sensitive?  I think she needs to be stronger and learn to control her emotions.  Any suggestions?

Remember this is also a learned behavior.  It won't go away overnight.  So be consistent and don't give up too soon.  It is also possible this is a behavior that she has learned to use to her advantage.

One book that I might suggest you read is "the highly sensitive child" by Elaine N. Aron.  It can be purchased on-line or in a bookstore or borrowed from a public library.  Hope this helps ...
