11 yr old boy who sleeps with grandma

I have an 11 yr. old son that still sleeps with his grandmother.  I am divorced and my son had to live with his father for 4 years from ages 4-8. He came back to live with me and his grandmother when he was 81/2. His father is his biological dad and I am his adoptive mom. (This is why his dad got custody. My son and I get along great.)
Anyway, his father moved him upstairs and away from him when he was four (in a 5,000 sq. ft house!)  and according to my son, he stayed awake most nights scared to death. When he came to stay with me he asked to sleep with his grandma, as it was summer and I had to work it was ok since I wouldn't be there to hear him if he needed anything. That was 3 years ago and he's still doing it.
He has his own room and bed and I bring up the subject often, but he says he'd rather sleep with my mom. He is above average in intelligence (6th grade doing 8th grade work.) BUT THIS I CAN NOT UNDERSTAND! What do I do?

It seems like he likes your mom's company , and I personally can find nothing wrong with this many folks have family beds, , however it may be a good idea if you spoke to your mom and as he is 11 years old and coming up to puberty ,get her to ask him to use his own room to sleep maybe he can pop in to see her at the weekends , I think for his own independance it may be good .,it should come from her, she can be firm but not create any feelings of upset ...
