12 month old vomiting at night

Hello. My 12month old daughter has vomited in the middle of the night for the past 6 nights. She has been sick- first a cold then an ear infection and was on augmentin, but her last dose was yesterday. She is fine during the day but every night it is the same thing- her stomach starts making load gurgling noises and her mouth gets watery and she vomits. She sleeps with us and nurses before she goes to bed and then once more during the night. Most of the time she doesn't vomit until 3am or 4am which is well after her feedings. She acts completely normal during the day.

Would the antibiotic still be in her system? Could she suddenly start have side effects of the antibiotic? Any advice on whats going on? Could she have possibly developed an allergy to breast milk?

Thank you for your help Dr. Kennedy. After speaking with her dr, they recommended I try to give her Florastore to help restore some of the good bacteria in her stomach which could have been making it hard for her to digest food. That seemed to do the trick... she stopped vomiting the day she started taking it.

I should not attempt to gauge this. Check with your doctor, who knows your daughter's condition, about the time frame when you should expect her to be well again. Generally, by the time a course of antibiotics is completed, the child will be well. However, as you are likely aware, illness can deplete a youngster and it can take time to regain their baseline state.

Thank you for the advice. How long should I wait for her to regain her normal health? She just finished her 10 days of antibiotics yesterday. And her vomiting didn't start until after the 4th day of taking it.

The half life of Augmentin is approximately 1.3 hours, so whether there is any concentration of the medicine in her system depends on the timing of the dose. Some children are sensitive to Augmentin, but it would be unusual for a child to tolerate it during the day and have a problem only at night. Now, the fact that she has been ill complicates the picture, and you'll only be able to obtain a clear picture after she regains her normal health. It may be that the feeding before bed has now become a problem, but while she is still recovering it's really not possible to know. The fact that the vomiting coincided with the illness would lead you to think that it's all part of the illness rather than separate from it.
