My son is 17 months old and he does some things that have me concerned so he hits himself in the mouth non stop until he starts bleeding, he spins in circles on the floor and laughs really hard, he is constantly opening and closing his hands like flapping. He does make decent eye contact occasionally, he understands no because he does cry. He doesn't point or say full words except mama and dada and meme and go. Other than that he babbles. I'm just worried about the hitting and flapping and such, he walks and crawls and stuff so I'm not worried about those things, but the other things he does everyday all day 247 until he goes to sleep. What do I do? Is this a tic? Does it sound like autism? He has a behavioral appointment in December but I'm just trying to figure out what is going on with him. Much help thank you!!
Hi there. I think you are very wise to seek an evaluation. I couldn't say that it sounds just like autism but yes, there are some similarities. Sensory processing or integration disorder is another possibility. Why do you have to wait until December? That booked up?
But I do think that you are smart to look into this.
BTW, my son has sensory integration disorder. It was upsetting early on at the time of diagnosis. Fast forward many years, and my son is doing really well. So, do not be afraid. They do AMAZING things to help our children these days. good luck dear
Is there any way you can go to a different facility for an assessment? Your profile doesn't say where in SC you live, but it's very likely there is an assessment/treatment center that may not be so hard to schedule.
I would start by looking at Occupational Therapists in your area.
Even if you have to pay out of pocket, if you can manage it, it seems better than having to wait 3 months. That's a long time.
I agree with the others, it sounds like sensory processing.
