19 month old not talking

by Patommy, Nov 15, 2001 12:00AM
My grandson is 19 months old and very smart - can point to any part of his anatomy, nose, hand, belly etc. or point to any animal you ask him in a book but refuses to say even mama or dada and I am very upset. Understands and does everything you ask him to do but will not say a word. Is very affectionate and loveable. Any suggestions?

No, not at this point. Some children approach their second birthday before they speak, so your grandson's behavior is not necessarily a cause for alarm. He clearly is understanding language, and that is a good sign. What guidance is his pediatrician offering?

I have not approached this subject with his parents because I do not want them to worry as I am. He is the first child and perhaps they do not think he should be talking as yet. I hope your comments are correct and I don't have to worry so. Thanks

I heard my grandson say ma ma yesterday and it brought a tear to my eye. I am so delighted and hopeful that this is the start of his talking. Praise the Lord!
