2 1/2 year old kicked out of daycare

by SSHREV, May 25, 2007 12:00AM
We have my boyfriends two grandchildren which are 2 1/2 and 4 yrs old.  The 2 1/2 year old got kicked out of day care today due to hitting, kicking chairs and picking on other kids. They even tried to put him in the older class and he continued to act this way. He does not act this way at home, because his sister is the dominent one there.  He mainly acts this way after he sees his mother or has been with the other grandparents which allow his sister to get away with anything and buys her things but not him.  Since they are under DCF care we do not have much say in their lifes yet.  The parents are going for Termination of their rights within the next month. If we even need to get there hair cut it has to be okay's through the court.  His problems at daycare only seem to happen after he has seen his mother or other grandparents.  I'm not sure what to do.  Should I contact his doctor for advice?

Asking for the pediatrician's advice certainly will not hurt; it can only help. However, it's important to take the bull by the horns and recognize that these children are the victims of their parents' irresponsibility. What is crucial is that the children now be brought up in a stable, sensible, rational family, not moving to and fro among several families, even if the families are blood relatives. Hopefully the court will appoint a guardian ad litem, whose function will be to determine what is in the best interests of these children. If there is a stable situation among the various relatives, so be it. If not, then the children should be placed in foster care. The goal, after all, is to provide them with what every child needs and deserves - a good home.

I am assuming your grandchildren's child services social worker/case worker is aware that your grandson is no longer able to attend the daycare and of his behavior problems related to the current parental visitation arrangement.  You may want to contact this caseworker with your concerns, if you haven't already.  In children and family services cases, an attorney is assigned to represent the children and often times a court appointed special advocate is assigned to protect their best interests.  You may also wish to contact these individual(s) with any concerns you have regarding your grandchildren.  All children and family serivices cases are reviewed by the court via hearings several times during the year as well.  You could write a letter to the judge or magistrate regarding any concerns that you have.  Best wishes...

The children and family services caseworker will be able to tell you the name of the judge of magistrate assigned to your grandchildren's case.  I recommend keeping regular contact with this caseworker as well as an interested party to your grandchildren's case.
