Some children just take longer than others to speak, others may have an impairment or maybe your not working with him enough...and only giving him what he wants without him having to utter a word. If your teaching him words as you show him what the words represent he will eventually catch on. You have to work with him always. Or he may need a speech language pathologist, I would get him evaluated and get a professional's opinion.
Hello! Our son was not speaking by the age of two so we consulted our pediatrician. She had his hearing checked because he had had a lot of ear infections. His hearing was fine so the next things she had us do is contact the local University that offered free child development help. We contacted them and they did a series of test to determine what the problem could be. It came back that he did in fact have a speach impedement. they started coming to our home 2 times a week to work with him and they started teaching him sign language as well as my husband and I. This really seemed to help because he could communicate with us. After about a year he was saying well over 100 words. He is still seeing a speach therapist, but he is doing awesome and you can understand pretty much everything he says. The speach therapist will continue to see him because there are a few things he still needs to work on. She is hoping that by the end of the Preschool school year he will be done with the therapy. I would suggest talking with your pediatritian and seeing if he/she thinks it is something you should look into.
My son didn't say more than two words till he was almost three. I wouldn't worry, he can communicate to you what he wants, why should he talk. I had a nickname for my son, Grunter, because thats what he did to get what he wanted. Then all of a sudden he was talking full sentences by three and a couple months. Now he wont be quiet. Does your son have older siblings who can "talk" for him, that would also be a reason he doesn't feel the need to talk. My best friend 'translated' for her little brother till he was almost four.
I really hope someone experienced replies to this because my son will be 2 this weekend and still doesnt talk.. I read books to him all the time i just dont think he's ready to talk yet..and a lot of the time he doesnt respond to his name.. im not sure what to do.. i hope this is just a phase..
