2nd grade boy social issues

My 7 and a half year old son is a smart and very communicative boy. My husband and I, as well as his younger brother enjoy spending time together and enjoy adult conversation. But amongst his peers, I see that he is "not hip" or doesn't completely connect with any of his friends. Over the three school years, all his teachers have expressed concern that he does some annoying things that are bothersome i.e., play with his pencil or small toy, lol a lot during story time, etc.  Cute at first, though after some time, can become annoying.  Also w his classmates, hasn't really connected with a lot of them, even though he has done a handful of playdates which are good, though during recess he seems enjoy playing by himself or more parallel play.  He is completely disorganized and yes, I still do a lot for him bc I enjoy it though he can easily do it too.  What social things can he do to improve his peer relationships and be more readily accepted,as well as build his confidence in school situations that we readily see and hear at home???

Thanks, Caring Mom

The insurance company can tell you about menatl health providers in your area who lead social skills groups for children.

He would benefit from a social skills group. Ask about this at school - perhaps a guidance counselor or school social woker will know about these and how to access one. You can also check with the insurance company their providers.
