3 year old son rejects potty training

My 3 year old not only refuses to go on the potty but won't even tell anyone when he's gone in his diaper. When it's apparent that he's dirtied his diaper and we ask if he's gone potty he would usually lie about it. Started breaking him of lying but he has a new tactic of saying "what?" and acting confused as if he has no idea what we're talking about when we explain about using the potty. When he's set on the potty it's normal for him to cry and even get a little mad. I know boys tend to take longer to potty train but if he's not saying a word after he goes potty (and trust me, he knows), how can we get him to tell us BEFORE he goes?
