3 year old with sleeping/eating issues...

Instead of writing a very long story about my son, i am just going to give symptoms and background info...i am a very concerned mommy and i would like to know if this sounds like a serious disorder or if it is just him being 3....

symptoms:
will not sleep without me by his side (never really has been a good sleeper)
very light sleeper..the second i move out of bed he is sitting straight up
wakes up many times through the night.
cries upon waking almost 90% of the time, during naps or at night. (not screaming though).
not quite fully awake when he does the crying.
cries at the drop of a hat.
not a good eater at all, very aware of textures and smells of foods.
very strong gag reflex, ramdomly just throws up.

he has fairly good speech, loves to play and run around.  he is a middle child,  has an older brother (5) and yonger sister (10months).
A few factors i think might play in this is i had a baby 10 months ago, and we also took his pacifier from him about 6 months ago.  other than these issues he seems to be a fairly happy child, very laid back, pretty shy.  His pediatrician suggested a child psychologist.  that scares me...is there something really wrong with him?

The only reason to consult a child psychologist would be for you to gain some guidance re: management of the situation. In other words, your son is not displaying the signs of emotional disturbance, but you may want to design a different sleep arrangement. In this regard you could also confer with a clincian from a sleep clinic, preferably one that deals with pediatric issues. Also, take a look at Richard Ferber's book: Solve Your Child's Sleep Problems.

Re: the food issues, arrange an evaluation with an Occupational Therapist. It does sound like your son displays some Sensory Integration problems.
