3 yr 10 mo old boy having issue with conversation

Ok, I have read many many posts here. Now let me ask your opinion about my son.
First it was our fault as [for some reason] we did not spend time telling him "hi" "bye" etc when he was almost 1.5 years but put him in fron of TV to watch cartoons.
Anyway we strated telling him different words when he was almost 2.5 years and he started repeating when he was almost 3. Now he repeats everything but he is not very good at creating sentences. I taught him like "i want milk" and he can say that when needed and some other time like if he needs some toy he would say "i want toy" etc also when he wants to get out he would cry but if I say "say clearly" then he would start "I want go" etc. But he has to wait after every word and think to finish the sentence.
So he tries to communucate several ways but if i tell him to repeat 3/4 word sentence he would repeat last one or last two words. Although this is getting better now a days.
My main concern is his ability to tell a story or listen to a story while I read. He almost never listen to me when I read a story book. [But he listen to that at school with his friends].
He would start playing with me at that time and become very stubborn.
Other then this issue he can plays normal although sometime [when he is cranky] he pushes his friends or his younger brother [1.5 yr]. But he does not make any conversation with his friends other then "come here", "don't cry", "quiet", "good boy", "go" "run", "wait a sec" "good job" etc. and he would speak in his own language if he is too excited or happy.
He is good infront of outside people very polite and wants to talk to them [in his own language] or sometime "hi" etc.
He is good at cutting stuff at pre school and I think he does better at school then at home. He started writing A B C and 1 2 3. He is kind of potty trained, he can ride tri cycle, swim, swing, slide etc but he prefer to watch me playing ball/basketball.
Some time i am so scared just because of his conversation skill and sometime I feel very good to look at his memorising skill, he can remember every detail.
Anyway I am not a good writer but wanted to spell out what ever is in my mind and ask your opinion about my kid. Is he on right track or should i consult any Dr.? I am scared about Autism or Autism like issues after reading so many cases.

I am just waiting for the day when he would start telling me his experience/story etc.
Me and my wife are doing everything now [although it might be  late] to help him.

Your son is definitely not at the level of speech and language development that he should be for his age. A Speech and Language evaluation should be arranged. The other observations you made indicate that he is not displaying a Pervasive Developmental Disorder, such as Autustic Disorder. Since he is now in a pre-school program, he will have the opportunity to use language in his many interactions and you should see some progress. But try to arrange an evaluation. Perhaps the staff at the pre-school, or his doctor, can help you with this.

It's never too late to start helping your child and I wish you both every success with him.  My little boy was exactly the same.  We did speak to him early, read books, tried to play games but he ended up with gobledegook language and very limited real words.  His favourite pastimes involved computer, tv or hand held gaming.

He is now five and has been getting professional help for about two years .  He now relates his experiences from school to us and it is well worth the wait and hard effort.

Thanks. Was your child diagnosed with some disorder or that was just a delay? Is he going to regular pre-school?
I am happy that he is doing great. I am egarly waiting to hear his experience at school too.

He is going through assessments at the moment, primarily for autistic spectrum disorders, though there is a query that it could be developmental delay.  That is not to say that the same will apply to your child, as there is another child in my son's class (boy as well) who has developmental delays primarily with speech.  My son attends mainstream school full-time now but with a learning support assistant for one-to-one teaching.  He is a lovely, happy child and there are strategies in place that have made a huge, positive impact on his life and ours!
