4 year old withdrawing from children in preschool

by MIRIAM12, Dec 28, 2002 12:00AM
my grandson who is 4 years old lives with me and my husband. His 1 1/2 year old sister also lives with us. His mother gave custody to the childrens father. He works drivin a truck so is not around alot. the mother does not always come and get the kids when it is her time to have them she will call and make up lies as to why she can not get them. the grandson had been in play therapy for about 5 months when lived with the mother. since custody has changed he started preschool he has since become moderatley voilent in school he will not listen to the teachers, refusses to help pick up when time is withdrawing from the other children and plays by himself.  He has learned alot since he has been in preschool.  I feel sorry for the teachers. When he is at home he is a good child.  He is now in play therapy again. Trying to decide what we do now.

The therapy is a good idea, and I would add to it a systematic behavior management plan. This will require some collaboration between you and the school, and it would be worthwhile to ask the therapist to help you with it. Hopefully the therapist can consult with the school personnel in the process.
