4 yr old delayed development

My son did not walk unitl he was 17 months old. He has constant problems with his language and fine motor skills. He will be 4yrs old at the end of October. He does not know how to hold a pencil correct and grasps without any strength. My wife and I have worked with him but he is very disinterested in coloring or drawing. He mostly just prefers to play by himself with trucks, tractors or cars. He is not toilet trained yet.He shows interest in toilet but every time we try to get him to sit on it he refuses. He has probelms with communication. It is very diffcult for me to have a conversation with interactive dialgoe between myself and my son. His answers are short and often from memory of things that happened days before. Should i seek the help of an occupational therapist?

An occupational therapist might certainly be consulted, but it might be in order to have your son assessed by a team of developmental specialists who can evaluate the broad scope of his development (physical, cognitive, social/emotional, speech and language, etc.).

Your local school district may be one source of help.  They are required to evaluate children over the age of 3 who are in need of services.  There is a lot of information at www.ldonline on early identification of learning disabilities.
