4 yr old licking concerns

My 4 year old daughters has at times been doing some strange things. Not too long ago while changing her, she put her fingers on her mini and bum hole then licked her fingers hmm. I was very cross. Then again last week after her and hubby went shopping she took her shoes off and sat on the couch. She later came into the kitchen chewing something. I questioned her and she told me she licked the bottom of her shoes another hmm. Now today when I asked her to check the mail. She pulled the mail out and there was a little residue of something on her fingers and she licked that. I was upset cause there are snail pallets and dead snail including poo from the snails in the letter box. She I be alarmed and is this normal. She NEVER did this as a baby. Pls help

Its highly possible she is doing this because its getting her attention and you exclaim each time she does something'gross' so try ignoring it next time see if it goes away .Maybe some games and fun may stop her trying to get this kind of attention ., could be some boredom .

Thank you? I will try doing that and see how we go. I thought that perhaps we have an underlining issue. We are off to the Royal Children's today and I will ask him about this too. We are going there for her 4yr old Paedetrician Check up. Was nice to here another person giving me there opinions.

There is an actual medical condition where people crave odd things...it can be ashes or anything really...just things that normally shouldn't be eaten.  If it sounds like that to the Dr. I'm sure he/she will mention it to you.  I cannot remember the name of it.

It's also possible she is just curious about how things she is newly discovering taste.  I wouldn't think that is abnormal.  I think lot's of children like to taste things they are curious about.

I do know that putting things in the mouth can be a sign of sensory processing problems. It may just be a quirk for her, but it can't hurt to read up on it a little and see if she has any other symptoms. Almost all of the kids that I have worked with that had sensory problems had oral dysfunction of some kind (although not all kids who put things in their mouths have other problems).
You can google it, (oral defensiveness, oral dysfunction, oral sensory input, etc)
