5 going on 6

5 going on 6

My son is 5 he'll be six in march he's very smart and really picks up on things very fast however he really seems to have a problem with being able to stay focused. In his kindergarten class they have a system the teacher uses, three colors Green = Good, Yellow = Needs some improvement, Red= Bad. Since the beginig of the school year he has stayed on green however this week hes gone from yellow to red for talking to much in class. We have talked about his talking in class tried time outs as well as taking video games away form him. His focus seems to be getting worse insted of better I'm not sure if this is normal. I'm sure it's not normal for him he has always been the example of a great student/son. What can I do HELP

My guess, if he used to stay focused and now doesn't (although it's pretty normal for boys at this age to be all over the place) that maybe he's got in with a group of boys or other kids that are a bit rowdy and loud, and is following their example? It could be. I would try to see where he sits, with whom, and find out if he's being led into this behavior by others around him. Kids will follow anothers lead. It could also be that he's bored, and doesn't care to pay attention because it's not stimulating him enough. My guess though, would be that he just fell off the wagon for a bit, cause he was having too much fun talking with the other kids instead of listening. I would just work out a system, of punishments, for this kind of behavior if it continues. Whatever you decide to do, it needs to be consistent. It might also help, if you talk to his teach and ask if he can be seated around those kids that are quiet and do pay attention. If he's sitting with trouble makers, he'll be less likely to pay attention. I think he's totally normal, but if it becomes a real serious issue, and his grades or progress decline sharply, then I'd have him evaluated. He sounds like every other kindergarten  age boy I've ever seen. I have a 10 year old daughter, and just about Every boy in her kindergarten class was that way at one time or another.  Good luck!

thank you for the comment. I'm so used to him being good that it has really thrown me for a loop now that he's bringing home bad reports from the teacher. At home everything is consistant the only thing that has changed is the fact that I am home more now but i thought that would have helped. Either way I think that I'll give him a week or two and if he's not back to his normal self I'll be talking to his teacher as well as his doc.
thanx again
