5 year old cryer

5 year old cryer

I have a five year old son that I am having issues with.  There isn't a day that goes by that he doesn't cry about something.  If he is at a store and we do not allow him to buy a toy, he cries (not a tantrum just truly sad).  If we do allow him to buy he again cries because he cannot decide what he wants to buy.  If we offer him a book before bed, he cries because he cannot have a movie, and the same vice-versa.  He cries if he thinks he might get in trouble, he cries if we laugh at something cute he does.  Again these aren't tantrums, he is truly sad.  We give him a lot of love, and encoragement, but just cannot beat this crying thing.  (A little background he also has an older brother who is 11 and a younger sister who is 2)  We have had issues with tantrums with him in the past, but he doesn't do that anymore.  We also try to set the day as much in advance as we can.  We tell him what we are going to do, what is going to happen, etc.  So there are no surprises, but that doesn't seem to help... Anyone have any advice.

Nothing wrong with your Boy , you are doing too much, he has realised that sad gets him what he wants, Back off from trying too much , he has found that he can make you feel bad and he can get more attention making you feel guilty, you are good caring Parents , its hard to see them sad. Back off ignore what he wants, give him less attention when he demands it then more when he doesnt.

I completely agree with margypops.  He's figured out that making you feel guilty works...even though it's difficult to see him sad, stick with your plan...(i.e.) if you are offering him a choice of books to read at night, but he wants a movie...stick to the books, etc.   You may see a temporary increase in attention seeking behaviour when you start ignoring some of this behaviour...but if you're consistent, he'll eventually figure out that acting up will not get him what he wants and he'll eventually stop,
