5 year old not listening

My 5 year old son isn't listening to anything my husband or I say. We have to ask him numerous amounts of times to do things before we have to threaten him. Even when I discipline him, he isn't phased by it. What can we do to get him to behave and listen? Anything would be greatly appreciated.
