5 year old poops and pees his pants.

My 5 year old poops and pees his pants.  He was potty trained at 2 and picked it up very easily but he has always had problems with constipation since he was a newborn, so he continued to poop his pants after he was potty trained.  Our pediatrician checked for blockage and found none, he then prescribed mirilax but that just gave my son diareah, he would have diareah for a few days and then go straight to being constipated.  I did this and tried messing with the doses for 2 years and got no results.  My pediatrician then told me to put pullups back on him and try backing off, but this just made it even worse because then he started peeing his pants as well.  I stopped the mirilax because i felt that just made it worse and i started giving my son mineral oil every day.  The mineral oil really helped with the constipation.  It has now been six months since he was constiptated but he is still having poop and pee accidents just about every day.  I can get him to go 2 days without an accident but then the very next day he'll have 5-10 accidents.  I have tried everything i can think of and i am not getting any results.  I have tried rewards, taking things away, going back to potty training days, reminding every 20 minutes, making him clean up his own mess, and i hate to admit but sometimes i have lost control and have yelled at him.  The later just makes him shut down and hide it so i know thats not the way to go.  The only way I have got results is by making him(it's a battle) go to the bathroom every 20 minutes.  I am at my wits end and i don't know what to do.  The situation has escelated and I feel that it is tearing my family apart.  I think it has come between me and my son, and it has also come between me and my husband.  Please Help!

I havent stopped having him do it, he is still doing it.  It's the only thing that gets me results but the longest he has gone without an accident is 2 days.  So it may be giving me results but it is not disolving the situation.

Bite the bullet and do exactly what you said was effective. If you know that having him sit on the potty was effective, why did you stop doing it?

I'm glad that worked for you but that has not worked for me.  He would sit in it all day if it was up to him.  It seems like he doesn't even care.  He's actually in there cleaning himself up right now as we speak.  This is the 3rd time that he has pooped his pants today.  Thank you for your advice though needless to say.

well when my son had this problem i made him sit in it for five min just to let him see how it felt (with no pull ups)...of course he didnt like it he cried and felt uncomfortable but then after that he started using the toilet every time he needed to go...some ppl may say that it was wrong of me to do so but i couldnt get him to understand what a toilet is for going to the bathroom and not in his pants...my father n law actually suggested that i do that.... needless to say that worked for him.... and no he did not get a rash from it
