6 year old not focusing and communication problems

My six year old is in kindergarten.  She went to the county MR/DD facility for 1.5 years on an IEP.  She graduated and only has to go to speech once per month.  She is not hyper, and is extremely shy.  She repeats herself constantly and asks herself questions when she does actually talk to people.  She loves to watch people.  Her teacher has informed us that she does not focus in class.  She does not pay attention, especially in group settings, therefore making it hard for her to go back to her seat and work on something that the teacher just explained.  The teacher explained to us that our daughter does understand the school work, she just has to have someone right there prodding her along.  She is the same way on the soccer field, off in her own little world.  Do I take her to our family doctor or what is the next best step on trying to help her?

Hello,  was your daughter evaluated during her time with an IEP?  Perhaps it is time to reevaluate her now that she is in public school.  She could be just adjusting to her new enviroment.  I would work with the teacher on this and make sure this isn't the case.  What things did they do in her old school that helped her succeed?  Perhaps they could carry it over into her new classroom.  I would have the school counselor involved as well to strategize how to help  her.

With that being said, I would google or read about sensory integration disorder before a diagnosis of ADD is given your daughter.  They are both delays of the nervous system but treated very differently.  I am guessing that they will want to evaluate her for this at some point in the near future.  I would also want to know about any learning disabilities.  One teacher says she understands the work, but that does not mean that is an absolute fact.  Is her speech just articulation at this point as if receptive language is involved, that could be an issue as well.

My son with sensory integration functions well now in class but didn't two years ago when he attended preschool (which is suppose to be all fun,, right?)  He was disruptive, didn't want to do any activities, wandered the room, etc.  He also had social problems.  Now he is happy to do his "tickets" which are his work at different tables set up in the room.  He works independently when needed.  Etc.  So it is important to know what exactly is going on so you can address it correctly.   Add is common to say about a child who doesn't focas but other things could be the reason.
Good luck.
