6 year old-possibly Sensory Disfunction?

by jojolw, Feb 04, 2008 02:08PM
My 6 year old daughter has been having clothing issues for the past 2 1/2 years.  It started with her underwear not "feeling right" and has graduated to nothing feeling "good" or "right" exept dresses.  I can't get her to wear tights without a huge fight, lots of tears, screaming etc.  We live in a very cold weather climate, she can NOT go without tights or pants.  When she does wear pants or tights she stretches them until they are at least 5 sizes too big.  It seems to me she doesn't like anything touching her hips or elbows, but I can't figure out the reason for the sudden onset - other than my having a baby.  But it's been, like I said, 2 1/2 years, and she adores her sister.  I've tried giving her extra attention, extra time etc, but things are getting worse instead of better.  I've been researching, and Sensory Disfuction almost sounds right, but she doesn't have many of the symptoms.  And in the past year, she has started defacating in bed.  She will get up to pee, but doesn't seem to know when she has to poop.  Not sure if it's related, but thought it is worth mentioning.

Is there an occupational therapist you can talk to at her school? This may be a good place to start.

I never thought about the school, I can check.  I've had her to the therapist at the health office and she was useless, "she'll grow out of it".  I'm tired of that answer, because it's not happening.  I will call the school and see what they say, thanks!
