6-year-old with a Developmental Speech Delay

by nomeous, Dec 04, 2008 11:04AM
Hello. I have a 6-year-old girl with what has been labled a "Developmental Speech Delay". She does extremely well academically and artistically. The problem seems to be when it comes to average converstations and following directions. When she is asked "What did you do in school today?", she will answer "I do recess", or "I eat lunch". When trying to get her attention, it is often necessary to raise one's voice, because she has ignored the first two or three verbal cues. She is in first grade, and since school started, she has become increasingly frustrated with her inability to express herself. She ultimately acts out physically or verabally in an inappropriate manner. Our Primary Care Physician didn't seem overly concerned with her development at her "Well Child" appointment this year, but there is obviously something wrong here. I was just wondering if you had any suggestions for any tests would benefit her.

Thanks,

Nomeous

Check with the school district.  Our daughter was having problems with speech and we had an inhome speech therapist from the school district come into our home and help her with her speech.  She had her blow bubbles and learn how to move her lips.  My daughter was not a talker when she was an infant, so she did not build up her muscles to be able to move her lips to talk well.  That may be the case with your daughter as well.
