6 year old with panic attacks?

by blondi1517, Oct 02, 2009 07:02AM
Hi.  My 6-year-old son broke his arm on the playground two weeks ago.  The first week with the splint was okay.  While he was getting his cast on, the tech told him "not to get it wet or his skin would turn white and rot off."  Needless to say, I was appalled!  (She was young and didn't have any malicious intent.)  Since then, my son has been a nervous wreck!  He has dark circles under his eyes and a wild look about him.  He goes to the nurse's office at school 3-4 times and day with various ailments.  He's staring at the various joints (fingers, wrists, ankles) on his body and cries constantly because he thinks they're "broken."  I doubt he's learning anything at school because his mind is constantly worrying about what's "wrong" with him.  I took him to get a flu shot yesterday and he literally tried to run away because he was scared of having a "reaction" to it!  They had to lock the doors in the clinic so he wouldn't escape.  On the way home he told me that he wanted to "kill himself." Not only is he making himself crazy, he's making the rest of the family crazy, too!  I'm at a loss as to what to do.  Should we take him to see a therapist?  Will he grow out of this after he gets his cast off or will this disorder manifest itself forever?  Please help!

aww i'm so sorry to hear. but you should seek help for him, take him to a therapist so that he can get the help that he needs before his condition gets worse

It sounds as if someone or another child has been frightening him and making him upset, has he any older siblings, relatives that would talk further about issues similar to the tech, .Has he over heard any upsetting talk ,Be aware and check out the dynamics around him I doubt this would have come up in this way unless he was made worried.Ask him who has been talking to him .It could be reaction to over reaction from others ..
