6yr old pooing his pants

my grandson is now 6yrs old and continually poos his pants. He has done it at school many a time and because neither of my daughters have a car I have to pick him up.
I normally will make him shower and them wash his underpants himself telling him that it would be a lot easier if he had just gone in the toilet and wiped himself there. The school is totalling fed up with him now but they are not really doing anything useful to help us with the situation.
At first we thought he was scared of the school toilet but then he started doing it at home too. Also the other day he pooed in a bowl and wiped it round his aunts car.
My husband and I had the children for a few hours after school yesterday and my grandson kept telling us how he hadn't pooed his pants today but after we took him home and just before bedtime he pooed his pants again.
My daughter is a single parent and the children's father has nothing to do with them.
We are all rather at the end of our tether with him. Can anyone help?
