7-YEAR OLD NEPHEW'S FEARS

My nephew (grand) has been expressing many fears, which seem to be of a separation anxiety disorder.  It began when he did not want to go to school this past year.  It was several months of trying different methods of getting him there and keeping him there.  The teacher and principal tried to come up with solutions.  It took almost six months, but he finally felt comfortable going.  This past year he also shows a fear of being left alone.  He needs to know where someone is in the house to make sure he is not by himself.  As well, any news of tornadoes, hurricanes or other disasters would make him terribly upset and sometimes panic-stricken.  He is scared when it rains as he thinks a tornado may be coming. He makes his parents turn off the television if there is anything on he finds upsetting.  Most recently, the coverage of the death of Michael Jackson was added to the list of things he couldn't watch.  He is at the lake where he loves the water, shows no fear of fish, leeches, bugs or birds of any kind.  However, he spotted a boat at the marina which was sunk and now will not go in the boat.  How should his parents handle this?  Do you think he should see a professional?  He has two younger sisters who as yet do not express these fears.

You have just described GAD - generalized anxiety disorder.  Whether or not this is the issue with your nephew, only a pediatric mental health professional would be able to  say.  I might suggest that you google the phrase "GAD and children" or "childhood anxiety disorders" or similar words/phrases to learn more about this issue.

If anxiety is the issue, I assure you that this child will not outgrow it nor will it go away - some symptoms may disappear but other will always take their place.  By the way, anxiety  is very common in children and highly treatable.  I wish you the best ....
