7 year old boy, dosen't care about himself or personal property

by Darryl, Mar 27, 2001 12:00AM
My 7 year old is above average academically, reading and writing and math beyond his grade level, which he is proud of.

He is well behaved and is growing up with triplet 5 year old sisters.

He is a good boy, well adjusted and content on his own, yet he is very adult dependant.

He needs constant reminding about everything from brushing his teeth to taking care of his things. Which is probably normal for a 7 year old boy. Yet he is more work and needs more reminding than his three younger sisters combined.

What concerns me is that he does not stand up for himself. He lets other kids (peers) take advantage of him and pick on him.

What can we do?

It sounds like your son is, generally, developing quite well. He's only seven, so it's not unusual to demonstrate dependence on adults. With peers, be sure to include him, during each season of the year, in some form of organozed group activity. Practice makes perfect, if you will, in this regard, and the more peer activity he has, the more capable he'll become.
