7yrold son bursting into tears for no apparent reason

by blackraven, Jun 20, 2001 12:00AM
My 7 yr. old son who was born at 26 weeks and suffers only asthma as a repercussion of his prematurity has been crying for seemingly no apparent reason for the past year on and off.  My husband and I have asked him what is the matter, are you tired, are you scared, did someone hurt you, are you afraid of disappointing someone and still he says he does not know.  I think he has much internal stress as externally things are fine.  We have a happy marriage and spend alot of time doing things with our children and are always feeding their self esteem .  My son weighs only 40lbs and does take several different medications daily (flovent, singulair, rynatan, nasonex and albuterol as needed, which is not often) and I am concerned that all this medication is too much for his body to handle or that the inhaled steriod is causing these emotional breakdowns.  I know he is young and it is hard for him to verbalize deep feelings but we are all frustrated with the situation.  I have made an appointment to speak with his primary care physician and hope she can guide me in the right direction. Can stress cause this? What is the best way to handle it when it happens? Thank you in advance for your opinion.

Yes, there's no doubt that stress (which may not be evident from an 'objective' point of view) could bring about such reactions. It's also entirely possible that his emotional sensitivity is influenced by the collection of medications he takes - these can promote emotional instability.

Apart from the crying, how is he doing? Is he functioning well within the family? Does he have friends and, if so, is he doing well with them? How is school going for him? If, at the so-called bottom line, he is mastering the demands of his life, it is entirely possible that you are witnessing the side effects of medsthough this would only be true if he is taking these medications on a pretty regular (as opposed to intermittent) basis.
