9 year old boy

9 year old boy

My son is 9 years old.

He recently has been showing some signs of Ticking... such as head movement like shaking hair out of his eyes [that isn't there], repeated neck movement & knuckle cracking.

This has come on very fast, within the past week or so.There has been nothing that I would think in his life to stress him out...
Our family recently had an extended visit by my oldest son and his family. But now that they are gone, all is back to normal.

He is not hyperactive and has no other medical problems.
When I talked to him about it he said it feels like something is"itching" under his skin.

Should I be concerned ? If so what steps should I be taking?

Dear Ms. Baker,

You should definitely seek an evaluation with your son's pediatrician. These behaviors might represent a transient tic disorder; they might be the first signs of Tourette Syndrome. Whatever the case, an assessment is warranted. Your pediatrician can determine if an evaluation with a pediatric neurologist is warranted.
