ACC behavioral impact

by asser, Jun 09, 2001 12:00AM

Could agenesis of the corpus callosum be affecting my 19 year old sons emotional devleopment? He is being treated for a psychological condition which has yet to be diagnosed. A recent MRI revealed the ACC condition. Is there a typical relationship between ACC and depression or suppressed emotional development?

As you already know, the corpus collosum connects the two halves of the cerebrum, and allows "communication" between them. We know, via clinical examples when surgery has been performed to disconnect the two halves to help people with severe epilepsy, that their basic personality remained unchanged. Some of the patients have experienced problems in orientation, short term memory and concentration (thus making some tasks, such as reading, more difficult). In agenesis, the cells of the corpus collosum do not develop as they should. Now, it's possible that your son's neurological condition has contributed to his emotional state, but this would not necessarily be predicted on the basis of a problem with the corpus collosum alone.
