ADHD med okay for Tourettes?

by jud43, Nov 14, 2008 01:25PM
We have a barely 13 yr old boy with ADHD and Tourettes (just tics).  Although he is medicated for Tourettes, he needs medication for his ADHD, but Drs say it can increase Tourettes.  Any advice?

There is a risk in prescribing psychostimulant medication to treat ADHD in a child who displays TD. The risk is that the treatment for the ADHD will worsen the involuntary muscle movements (tics). However, a non-stimulant treatment for ADHD, such as Strattera (atomoxetine), may benefit your son. So there are options and you can discuss these with your prescribing doctor.
