ALL MOMS PLEASE READ

I have a 3yr old son.  He has always been very hard to handle as he would switch from one thing to another so fast. I was considering asking my doctor to check him for ADD b/c he was sooo (what I call)  hyper.  Anyways by fluke I realised that when he did not have milk he acted so much better.  I started reading found info about an allergy to milk proteins.  Dorctor tested him and sure enough he was allergic.  I just wanted to pass this along in hopes that i could help someone.  Somedays I would just cry b/c I didnt know what else to do.  I beleive the part he is allergic to is called casein.  Also causes ear infections...runny nose and tummy problems..all of which my son struggled with.  Best of luck.

That is great.  I think a lot of people are too quick to put their kids on medicine without exploring other options.  Glad it worked out!

I too, think that is great that you were able to find out what was wrong without jumping on the Ritalin band wagon.  I have a very hyper active six year old son, and his father suffered from food allergies as a child.  Definately something to look into.  Thanks for posting.

Thank you for posting this information...I have a son who has attention problems..nothing horrible but it is starting to affect his behavior in school..I have started to notice a connection between what he eats and his behavior. Whenever he eats alot of processed foods..especially fast foods...he seems to be out of the box..but I also noticed that if he drinks alot of milk he is also like that.  Like most mothers I thought it couldn't possibly be the milk, but now I am starting to wonder...Thank you for your post..I am going to try an elimination diet this month!!!

I am glad that you are paying attention...I know how frustrating it can be.  My son also LOVED milk and drank it all the time.  Prob 5 glasses a day.  The protien he is allergic to is called casein..it may be spelled casien.  Anyways it is also in many other foods.  Bread, butter.  I buy some of his food at a health food store but some of the things I have found safe at the regular store are the following.

Smart Balance Light butter
Natures Own Organic Bread
Silk Soy milks (we do the regular and the Chocolate)
Also Gram Crackers, popcicles rather than icecream, capri suns.
I buy a popcorn by Orville Redenbacher that is organic that is safe

I have found that most proccessed foods have some type of milk, cheese or bread in it that contains the protein.  Also alot of cereals, and chocolate.  I would stick to just fruits, veggies and meats to try him on and see how he does.  If you need some snacks these have been good for us so far.  Also the natural food stores have cheeses, icecream, cream cookies.  Just thought I would share with you the little I have learned.  Either way I hope you find out what is going on and best of luck to you.

I thought some of you might find this interesting:

As it goes, even us adults can change our moods and well being by changing our dietry habits. I mean we hear it all the time that good diet equels good physical and mental ground work but when you see the serious effects that a little processed foods or artificial sweeteners and stabilisers have on mood let alone the body it should really make us all stand up and take note. Unfortunately we live in a world driven by large corporations catering to consumerism and this leads to companies developing foods for us to consume with lower production costs. more pyschoactive ingrediants and larger profit margins for the companies involved. It doesn't take a brain surgeon to realise that battery farming chickens for example, is going to have a negative effect on the health of the nation. If these chickens are reared from hatchlings in a contained space, pumped full of growth hormones, water and steroids and brought to slaughter weight in some cases under 32 weeks then it should be clear that some of these chemicals enter the human food chain and may effect not just the physical but also the mental welbeing of the regular consumer. Dont get me wrong, I love chicken! But I am aware and watch for these kind of problems developing in children. Keep your eyes open, its not simply about allergies to milk, its about more then that, its about a culture of instant gratification and less time to care
