My son is autistic and hits himself but my niece used to do that as a child.  One day when my sister was angry she noticed that SHE was doing this.  This is where my niece learned to do that.  This could just be an expression of anger.  You can teach your child to express his anger another way like telling you why he is angry.  If you take the time to explain the reason why a child can't do something....other than just saying no.....they usually respond better.  This teaches them the correct way to express their feelings in a mature way so when they get older they feel better about sharing their feelings with words instead of violence or self inflicted pain.  Even with my autistic son I say.....I know you are mad but I took the knife away from you because it is sharp and if you get cut we will have to go to the hospital.  This method really diffuses the situations.  You just have to remember that you are raising children to be adults.....thus you should be giving them the tools that they will need to be good adults.

yes,
its anger, frustration, not knowing whats going on in your own head, just wanting the over flow of emotions to stop
i do the emotions annonomous program, but thats not for kids
my 9 yr old has learning disibilities, he is not violent but looses control over emotions when we do math, he has dyscalcula
we use a site for alot of behavioral fixes, the actual company is in our city, and is used by our public school systems special education program
i am a homeschool parent, started homeschooling a few months ago
