Abnormal Brainwaves

My 9 year old son had trouble about two years ago with his hands and feet falling asleep for no apparent reason and at all times of the day and night.  We had a sleep-deprived EEG done and they said that he does have some abnormal brainwaves but that we should just continue to watch him.  Over the last year he has had times when he becomes very angry over what appears to be nothing.  He also complains and cries when noise is loud saying it hurts his head.  When he's tired, this is intensified.  He plays Nintendo (we've now limited or even disallowed him to play).  Do you have any thoughts on what might be the problem?  I know there is something that's not being detected by the doctors.  Please help me.  Thanks.

Dear Ms. Rose,

Your son's physical symptoms may be related to his anger, but this is by no means a certainty. Some types of seizure disorder can result in volatile angry outbursts. It would certainly make sense to continue to pursue neurological studies, and to obtain a second opinion if you wish.

You also may try posting your question to MedHelp's Neurology Forum, where you can take advantage of their expertise.

I forgot to mention that my husband suffers from clinical depression and am not sure if that might have something to do with this.

Dear Ms. Rose,

Volatility, anger, iritability and reactivity often typify mood disorders in children. If additional neurological workups prove negative, a pediatric mental health evaluation would be a logical next step.
