Advice needed regarding frustrated 14 weeks old

by zazou, Sep 17, 2009 10:02AM
My daughter, who is 14 weeks 2 days today, loves her hands, as babies do at that age. She constantly tries to suck them but still doesn't have good eye-hand coordination. She is constantly frustrated when she tries to put her hands / fingers in her mouth and can't really suck on them. I know that all she wants to do is suck because when I try to put her on my breast (as sometimes putting hands in mouth means she's hungry), she stops after a few secs and tries to put her hand in her mouth.

I try to give her a pacificier/dummy and usually this wasn't a problem with her but she realises now that her fingers are a part of her and are much more interesting.

What can I do to help her? She gets so frustrated when the hand / fingers don't stay in her mouth. The pacifier isn't helping (only when we go out).  has anyone else had the same problem and when does it usually go away?

Sounds okay/normal....   I am not certain what you are concerned about, sucking her fingers is okay, some suck their toes Lol thats also okay , try giving her toys and playing with her , they love music it is a big distraction, It may never go away till shes older most children/babies do this .

If you are trying to help her fulfill her need to soothe by sucking----  try putting a toy in her hand (you know how they just curl around it)  then it will be easier to get a bigger item to her mouth.  She'll get more and more coordinated as she grows, maybe even by next month.  Babies are fascinated by their hands, aren't they?  I remember my son just staring at his hand like it was some major work of art (which to me it was!).  Good luck and enjoy her----  it goes so quickly!
