Asperger Syndrome or more?

Asperger Syndrome or more?

I am the mother of a 15-year-old with HFA.  We intervened early/aggressively, and he is doing great.  We are actively involved in his education and interventions. My question is about my brother's son, also 15.   His language developed normally, but had delayed motor skills.  He did not walk until he was 15+ mos. old and had difficulty with handwriting - he wasn't able to depress the pencil hard enough. I only get to see my nephew every few years.  When I saw him 5 years ago, I immediately knew something was wrong. My first thought was Asperger's as he is quite intelligent and pedantic in his speech.  He is not quick to pick up on humor and is literal.  He is very withdrawn, does not choose to participate with the other kids in any activities and, in fact, has to be told by adults that he WILL participate in an activity.  Under these circumstances my son would tantrum, but my nephew will do what he's told, but just half heartedly. He's quite clumsy.  However, he does not perseverate on topics.  He just doesn't talk to people.  I just saw him again this summer and, now five years later, I see no change at all in his affect.  In the five days we were together, he spent most of it in a chair in the 100 degree house playing Nintendo DS, instead of at the beach with family. Everyone - for YEARS - has commented that my nephew NEVER smiles in pictures.  This occurred again in the family photos we had taken this summer.  His mother also told me that at home he spends so much time in his room that she forgets he's there.  I immediately said that's what our son does (hint, hint), but that I require him to come out during the day, always planning favorable activities to draw him out.  I don't know how far to push this, but I'm so concerned.  His mother recently told my mother that my nephew is having trouble dealing with emotions. Is this Asperger's with depression?  OCD and Tourette Syndrome is also in the family.

It may well be Asperger's Disorder. It would be wise for his parents to have him evaluated. Obviously there is a limited amount you can do - he's not your child. But, if his parents are open-minded and receptive to guidance, you may be able to offer them a pespective on what to do.
