I had parent teacher conference last night for my 7yr old son. He has had some issues in the past. He was born full term 9lbs 10oz chronic otitis media had PE tubes and tonsil adnoid (adenoid) removal by age 2. He was always seditary child. W sitter. We thought it was just his big headand body he would out grow it. He never crawled he scooted. At age 4 I signed him up for swimming, baseball, basketball and soccer HE WANTED TO TRY IT ALL... During this time I noticed he mived different much slower then other kids his age. Allmost like he was unaware of were his body was in relation to the world around him. I spoke to peditrican and we had OT eval set up. We did 6 weeks of MNSI motor neuro sensory intergration he did well made large improvement. Now in first grade hes having issues again so I am back at MNSI its extreamly difficult to find a MNSI PT. I find one ONE with waiting list no pediatric therapy in our area besides zero to three wait lists are 2years. I get a call from MNSI PT she has opening we are IN 2hour a month and i take any cancelations she has. We find Ethan has SPD sensory processing disorder vestibular auditory sensory 22under developed reflexs ATNR STNR just to name a vey. School sets up 504 meeting we are threw first set of test. Processing speed
is very very low for his age. He tests average to superior verbal comprehension-average perceptual thinking-average working memory-very very low processing speed- average IQ 105 BEHAVIOR ASSESMENT came back high risk in these following areas Attention, atypicality, withdrawl (withdrawal),emotional distress, upsetting thoughts, social problems, anxiety and worry...Ok NOW WHATschool has no advice program or next step to help him.. I am determined to help him be best version of himself..PLEASE I NEED HELP
If he is progressing well academically you needn't do anything on that front, but I imagine the slow processing speed will interfere wit his functioning. This limitation cuts across all subject areas, and as the difficulty of the curriculum increases he will struggle. He might also benefit from a social problem-solving or social skills group. Ask his pediatrician or the counselor at school if they know of any resources for such help.
He is in a small group that meets once a week. We have him set up for another OT/PT eval threw school. They come in once a week. School pysh dr is running his group they are disscussing the zones blue, yellow, green and red they practice turtle method to calm them. Ethan attends a STEM School Science Technology Math and Engineering. He is in the 99% of his class. They also inforce PBIS behaviorsystem in every grade.
