Autism/Heredity

I just learned yesterday that my 2 1/2 year old son has autism.  The child neurologist he saw feels that it is a mild case.  My husband and I are currently undergoing fertility treatments.  I am taking Clomid.  My question is:  What are the chances of having another child with Autism?  There are no other family members (even extended family) diagnosed with Autism, but I know that it can be inherited.  I'd just like to know what the chances would be of having another child with Autism.

I cannot tell you the precise likelihhod of your having another child with a Pervasive Developmental Disorder, but there certainly is a chance this might occur. If you consult with a geneticist you can probably learn more about the relative risk involved.

Two brothers of mine have autistic sons.  One brother's wife has an autistic relative.  The other's wife has lupis.  Another brother has a son who is learning disabled.  All of the girl children are normal.  I am afraid to have a child.  Should I be afraid?

It would be prudent to consult a geneticist. The situation with your brother's wife does not impact you, but your nephews' situation may have some implications.
