On top of what the doctor said. Enuresis is a very typical problem.
The best thing especially with a young child is to comfort him and never blame him. If this is a non behavioral enuresis (meaning he's been wetting his bed since he was born) then he's got only up to 4 years or less till he stops.
Enuresis is usually caused by either weak, disproportioned bladders or Weak urinary muscles. Medication is effective, but if your child is sensitive (i.e. allergies to medications, weak stomach, so on...) Then medication wouldn't be the best way to go, The Bed wetting alarm is a good alternative, It's quite loud though. So for heavy sleepers they'll wake up, and if your next door you'll wake up to. All in good favour since you'll want to be there to help if he or she needs it.
Any other questions regarding to Child Enuresis contact me at my e-mail, I can hook you up with an online pamphlet on child enuresis and many socially unaccepted problems.

If your son has always been enuretic at night, this is likely not related to the other variables you mentioned. If he was formerly dry at night, and then reverted to bedwetting, it could be symptomatic of stress or turmoil. There are remedies that might be worth trying if you have not done so already. Wet-stop alarms are pretty effective at this age, and there are several choices of medications that can be useful for some children. You can speak with his pediatrician about these.
