Behavior and Febrile Seizure

by MarykMD, Oct 08, 2001 12:00AM
My son began to have febrile seizures at about 2 years of age, that continued until approxiametely the age of 4 1/2 years.

In the past 9-12 months my son has had, only what I can call, obsessive behavior towards my husband/his father.  Example, not being able to have him out of his sight when home.  Telling him over and over (within a short period of time) that he loves him, with a demand for noticable reply back from my husband everytime he makes a declaration of love.

There are other signs of obsessiveness, if not with my husband, he has to be playing with his friends.  If we call him in for dinner or homework, he becomes uncontrollable with anger and hysteria.  It takes anywhere from 20-60 mins to explain to him that he can come in and eat and then go out and play again.

My son is easy to anger, and difficult to calm down.  Recently he has started to kick at other students in school when he is upset by something they say or do.  (This has started within the past 3-4 weeks.)

5 days ago my son, who is now 7 years and 4 months had a complex febrile seizure at school.  My son has not had a seizure for at least 2 1/2 years.  (He is scheduled to see a pediatric neorologist.  Have you ever seen any correlation between a similiar problem like this?  They are 2 different areas of medicine, I know...I just don't know what to think.

The relationship between neurological conditions (e.g., seizure disorder) and behavioral problems or psychiatric symptoms is not always easy to discern. You are doing the sensible thing by scheduling the evaluation with the pediatric neurologist, and your son should also be seen by a child psychiatrist, with the two professionals communicating with each other (as well as with your son's regular health care providers).

My daughter had her first febrile seizure when she was 2 1/2.  She had 3 in a two month span.. the doctors said she had had a febrile seizure.  It wasn't until last month (now 4 1/2 yrs.old) that she had 5 in one day.  One of her seizures lasted almost 5 minutes.  They kept her in the hosptial for almost 3 days and scheduled her to have an EEG.  They did an EEG in the hosptial, a cat scan, and a meningitis test... all of her tests came back normal.  Now she has another EEG scheduled for December 3... because the doctors said she had too much medication in her when they did the first one. They are checking her for Epilepsy apparently... but she was sick the night before she had the seizures... Epilepsy just sorta happens doesn't it?? She has her good days and bad days... sometimes she is very good and sometimes you can't even look at her without her having a fit...
