Behavior

I have an 8 year old daughter, that is in 3rd grade, with an above average intelligence. Her problem is when children make fun of her, or things do not go her way she becomes very emotional and upset. She has hit a child, and yells at them. Although she knows her behavior is unacceptable, she wants to change, but she keeps saying mommy it's hard. I try to help her understand words and actions can hurt people. She tries to control her anger and not get so upset. The other night she was in her room crying, saying I will be good I can be good, I don't want to be bad... How can I help her to ignor the bad words or things other children say to her and go on with a positive action.
Thank you

It is encouraging that your daughter is mindful of her behavior and wants to change it. From the sound of it, she finds herself overrun by her emotions and then is not able to act in a rationale, thoughtful way. Often young children really don't profit much from therapy because they lack the capacity to be very introspective or they really do not regard their behavior as problematic. But your daughter has displayed some capabilities that warrant her commencing therapy - it would likely be useful. Also, you might want to establish a behavior modification system whereby she is rewarded for episodes when she displays more self control at moments of upset.
