Behavioral Seizures?

by ptbsn8, Jun 23, 2009 06:18PM
How are behavioral seizures diagnosed?  What are acceptable treatments?  Is VNS (vagal nerve stimulation) and acceptable means of controlling behavioral seizures in a child with ODD?  How do you tell if the child is acting oppositional and defiant or having a seizure?  Lots of questions as a child diagnosed with ODD, Intractable epilepsy, ADD etc was observed to have mother activating a VNS with her magnetic external activator when the child's behavior was not good.  Is this acceptable?

Hi there, first of all, has your child ever been diagnosed with a seizure disorder? They would have had to been seen by a pediatrician or more preferably a pediatric-neurologist. This all being after having a number of seizures. Then he/she would have probably had a cat scan done, and a mri done. I'm sorry if this is offensive but I do have a 7 yr old with a rare different type epilepsy syndrome. There are many different forms of epilepsy. If this has all been done, then your child probably would be put on a medication to try to control the seizures. I have never heard of "behavioral seizures". I am still learning new information for myself on epilepsy. My son who is epileptic has behavioral issues, but his is because of everything mixed together. His meds, the epilepsy, intellectual learning disability, and the list goes on. What type of seizures does your child take? My son takes grand-mals, myoclonic, and absent. He's on 4 different meds to help his seizures. Plus he's only a sedative to help him sleep or else he just keeps on going without sleep for a long time!  I don't believe every person with epilepsy has a learning problem like my son does. He was diagnosed with a intellectual disability through the school board psychologist when he was 6. I just saw a child psychologist with him on Thursday and he even said that he could tell that my son was intellectually disabled after asking him a few question over a ten minute conversation. My son wouldn't sit still. My son is in integrated special education. Even though he is 7 yrs old, he only learns at a 4 yr old level. My sisters 2 step sons are both ODD. I have seen them act out so I don't have first hand experience with ODD. Now that I read your entry more carefully, are you sure the mother knows the difference between the seizures and behavioral issues? Sometimes actions can be similar. Have you ever asked a doctor about these issues? Epilepsy is a very complicated issue to understand. If anyone is interested, they should google "behavioral seizures" and see what type of info they get. I hope that I've helped in some way. Private message me if you want to. I'm always on here daily.
