Behavioral problems with 12 year old Son

by bethg, Dec 07, 2001 12:00AM
I would like to know if there is any thing any one can suggest or advise what I can do to help cope with My sons behavioral
problems at schools.  He is 12 years old and is in the 7th grade.
He's had a behavioral problem since grade middle school.  He is
diagnosed with ADD and LD.  It seems that anything I do, whether
it's putting him on restriction from the things he likes to do. Or talking to him about his behavior and reminding him that will be consequences behind his behavior, he just seems to ignore it and act out.  His teachers complain of him eating in class when he knows that this is prohibited, consistent tardiness, and getting angry at times when the teacher disciplines him.  Please help with any of your suggestions because I feel verrryyy frustrated, and I'm also afraid for him.

Such childre, who display multiple, overlapping conditions, can be a definite challenge. Some childhood difficulties are best dealt with via straightforward behavior management plans and they don't require any significant professional intervention. But, in instances like your son's, I would recommend professional guidance. In addition to his ADHD and LD, he may be demonstrating the symptoms of a mood disorder, and this will be important to figure out.

In reply to your response....Do you suggest I seek out a
psychologist of a mental health counselor?  I forgot to
mention that my son is taking Ritalin (20mg) at one per day.
I was told by a nurse that Adderall (adderrall) might be better for him
since the acting out in the classroom seems to happen after
lunch, around 11:30, so I think the Ritalin wears off around
this time.  Thanks

The evaluation can be undertaken by any qualified pediatric mental health professional (psychiatrist, psychiatric social worker, psychologist, psychiatric nurse). I agree with the suggestion re: stimulant medication - Adderall (adderrall) or Concerta might be more helpful.
