Behavorial Problems

by Nune, Mar 21, 2008 10:50AM
My twelve year old son has had problems since he was two.  He is in the mentally gifted program at school.  He has a very hard time coping with others.  He has been diagnosed with Bipolar Syndrom (syndrome).  He sees a therapist weekly, a psychiatrist monthly and a behavorial specialist 3 hours a week.  He is on two medications, Risperdal and Lamictal.  It is hard to get him to take his medication.  He does ok on it but I am not sure his diagnosis is correct.  This school year, we could not get him to go to his new middle school.  We tried for months.  We took his to psychiatric hospitals to get evaluated and for help.  They put him in an outpatient behavorial clinic.  It did not help.  He can be the most loving boy and the next minute he can be the devil.  You can't say the word "No" to him he will start destroying things.  He is very messy.  He has only one friend, who just happends to also be Bipolar.  At the beginning of this year, we enrolled him in cyber school.  I don't know if it is the best thing for him, but he is at least doing work.  Socially, he needs to be around children, but when he went to school, unstructured time was the worst for him.  He would get into trouble every day a recess and lunchroom.  The would put him in the detention room for lunch and he liked it.  He has an inhouse suspension one day.  He did work math worksheets all day.  He returned to his class the next day and said what a great time he had.  He needs to keep busy, but his interests are low. I know there is a lot I am not saying.  Right now my head is so jumbled I can't think straight.  He is also causing relationship problems at home.  His father and I argue over what to do. He picks on his little sister.  And another parent wrote that her son gained weight.  My son has also gained a lot of weight.
