Chemotherapy and brain tumor

Chemotherapy and brain tumor

My grandson had surgery to remove a frontal lobe brain tumor and received 18 months of combined chemotherapy. As a result he is developmentally delayed and has a hearing loss of the upper register causing speech difficulties. He is now 5 and is not fully potty trained.  He also has speech problems. He seems quite intellegent but is obviously developmentally delayed. He still has some problems with his balance although not severe. We have heard that children's brains recover well from setbacks. What kind of time frame are we looking at? What kind of progress can one expect? Should he be seeing a special pediatrician?  He does get speech, occupational and physical therapy at his special school program which he has attended for two years now. Any insight would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you,
A Concerned Nanna

We cannot specualte here on the likely progress your grandson can expect. This depends on the particulars of his situation, and there really are no gneralizations that would be appropriate to set forth. He should continue to be under the care of a pediatric neurologist, and that person can consult with his pediatrician.
