Child Behaviour

My son is noe 4 1/2 years and has the following problems:-
1. Does not speak clearly.
2. Does not Pronunce words properly.
3. Cannot sit at one place too long, especially at church.
4. Teacher says he disrupts the class and she has to find     something for him to do in order to carry on her class.
5. Will not respond until his shouted at several times or spanked.
6. Cannot repeat a sentense when given.
Apart from the problems above, he had his tonsels and adenoise removed a month ago because the doctor claimed that it was restricting blood to his brain and had also caused his speech problems. I was also told by the doctor that I should not worry about his speech yet.
Any suggestions, any need for worry!
Thanks

Dear Ewan,
From your description, it appears that your son is displaying some difficulties in at least two areas: speech/language and behavior (when you mention 'will not respond', I'm assuming you mean that he will not follow parental directions). Given that his difficulties span both the home and school settings, it would be prudent to seek two evaluations. The first would be a Speech/Language assessment, (a)to detail where, along the developmental spectrum, he now stands relative to the areas of speech and language; (b)to determine the factors that have contributed, or are now contributing, to his problems in these areas; and (c) to delineate a treatment plan (if one is needed). At the very least, the evaluation would serve as a 'second opinion'. Relative to your son's possible overactivity and oppositionality, it would also be wise to seek a mental health evaluation. This assessment would clarify if your son is displaying any emotional or mental health disorder and, if his behavior is seen as simply a behavior problem along the normal spectrum, you could receive some guidance re: appropriate management at home and in school.
