Child caused pet death

by gmc3773, Jun 02, 2008 10:20PM
My daughter, who will be 6 years old in 2 mo, was playing at a friends house.  Her friend will be 5 years old in 2 mo.  They were upstairs in her friends room alone and while they were playing my daughter either threw or tossed their very small dog off the top of the huge bunk bed.  As a result the little dog died.  We think the dog hit the edge of the bottom bed and bounced off and hit the wall.  We are not entirely sure of what happened as there were no adults around (they were only supposed to be getting something from upstairs).  I am not sure how to handle it with my daughter.  She is thinking about what happened because she comments here and there but I am thinking about having her see a psychiatrist because i don't know if she is truly grasping the seriousness of her actions and I am not sure about how to go about helping her.  Does anyone have any suggestions?  I never dreamed of having to deal with this issue.  Thanks in advance.

I would not feel completely responsible because the parents should have provided better supervision.  It is possible the dog snapped at her, and she reacted.  I would make sure she understands the seriousness of the situation.  She should apologize to the family, and somehow be involved in the "burial process".  It is important that she understand that this little dog is now gone.

How did the family feel about all of this?  Were they forgiving or resentful?  I hope this doesn't ruin a friendship, but it is important that all involved learn something from this.

I would probably take her to a therapist if she shows no remorse or concern.

Good luck and God bless.
