Children urinating in closet and on the carpet

I have two small nieces, ages 3 and 4, who have recently begun urinating in the closet and on the carpet. At first their parents thought the urine was coming from their dog having accidents in the house, but found out it came from the girls. These are two very bright and long time toilet trained children.When the girls were asked why they were doing this, they both said they did not know why. Very strange and troubling behavior. What is going on here? As their aunt, I am very worried. Should we be concerned?
