Compulsive behavior in toddler

Within the past month I noticed my 22month old girl tearing her nails off!  I asked her doctor about how to stop this.  The doctor wants to refer her to a child psychiatrist because of how intent my daughter is about picking at her nails.  If she really has a compulsive disorder, wouldn't there be more than one thing that she would do compulsively??

I taught daycare for years and Iv never heard anything like THIS one thing.  I agree with the doctor.

At this age,  no it isn't likely that she would have more than one compulsion.  Compulsions often develop and feed on each other - and come and go in waves.  Nail picking to the extent that you describe is pretty classic compulsive behavior.  Have you searched the net for "nail picking" - I just did,  and there's a lot of good information out there.

Best wishes.
