Conduct disorders after using opiates during pregnancy

I have a now 5 year old who is very intelligent and does not have any physical dissabilities nor did she have any birth defects. I used percocet, tylenol 3 in my pregnancy. I used percocet during the first 5-6months in large quantities on average 30+ per day and more if I could get my hands on them, I also supplemented with tylenol 3 because it was easier to get and I felt I needed something to stave of the withdrawls that occured almost weekly to bi-weekly when I would run out. I continued to use tylenol 3 until 7- 8mos and then weened myself off completely about a week or two before my daughter was born. She was born without any defects however she was of low birth weight 5lbs 11oz and the cause is not completely clear since I smoked with the pregnancy but about 4 a day and I also had a 2 vesseled cord where there normally would be 3, 2 arteries and 1 vein, so I was missing an artery and this alone can cause low birth weight and in I believe 40% of cases some pretty major birth defects. So yes, God was watching out for me since as I said she has no birth defects. Now to the question:I was wondering if anyone had experience with conduct problems with their children after having used during pregnancy. It is not confirmed but my daughter seems to have a mild to moderate form of oppositional defiance disorder. If you are unfamiliar it is where she is constantly argumentative, likes to annoy you and authority figures(not sure why), is angry, resentful and in general is difficult and likes to do the exact opposite of what she is told. It is like walking on eggshells no to set her off because if she doesn't like something you've said she will become stubborn, angry and will refuse to do anything you ask and this lasts for a while like and hour or more and happens constantly thoughout the day.  One last note her father was a a handful too while growing up but he has another daughter 9 who listens well and has what I call "fear of authority" meaning afraid to displease authority and therefore does as she is told and wishes to please.  Thank you, and help, advice or experiences would be appreciated.

Thanks for your suggestions, I'm not sure about the others who have posted on here, but in my family we only eat organic, homemade foods. I made all my own baby foods. I've even had my son tested for food sensitivities. My son is so picky that processed foods are not even an option for him!
Diet is definitely important, but we cannot overlook the strong role genetics plays either. My grandmother had similar reactions to smells, as my son. My grandmother would cover her nose and run around opening windows if there were cooking smells in the house - cooking with garlic was repulsive to her. My son reacts in the exact same ways, yet he has never met my grandmother.

There are ways you can help your child's behavioral problems by addressing their over-all health.
What are you feeding your children?
While there may or may not be issues that began with substances taken during pregnancy, there is massive evidence that the chemicals used in processed foods are horribly harmful to anyone who ingests them let alone to the developing mind and body of a baby and child. Whole organic foods DO make a difference. And avoid soy - it is an estrogen mimicker. Once you learn about the chemical contaminants used in almost all foods sold in modern super markets, you will understand that it is vital to the health of your family to avoid them. Do some research. It may seem like it costs more but if you avoid expensive processed foods, it will average out and your family's over-all health will be so much better. And it certainly will reduce the possible causes. Food allergies of course are known but reactions to commonly used chemicals in foods are often overlooked.

In addition, and I am not suggesting this is the reason for your childrens' behavioral difficulties, merely that if you want to do the best you can for your child, please consider how vaccines are filled with toxins such as mercury and aluminum and can cause serious medical conditions. I do not care what your doctors might say in defense of vaccines, they have been trained under the influence of pharmaceutical companies. Look into a seeing a naturopath or other similar alternative health care provider and do a little research of your own - THE TRUTH IS OUT THERE. (And it is NOT illegal to refuse vaccinations know matter what you are told.)

I too have had a similar experience with my son. I also took a lot of extra-strength Tylenol for migraines during my pregnancy, and I worry that it may have caused problems for my son. My son is now eleven years old, but he was very similar to your daughter at five years old. We have been to many doctors, and they all recognize problems in my son, but have been hesitant to label him. Today we went to a specialist who diagnosed him with having a Regulation Disorder of Sensory Processing. This disorder is difficult to diagnose because these children are so complicated and have so many different symptoms. These children have sensory issues, but not all children with this disorder have the same sensory sensitivities. My son has severe eating issues. He eats an extremely limited diet because all food textures are bad to him. Normal smells are disgusting to him, therefore he cannot even be in the same room as the rest of the family during mealtime without having a meltdown. He also doesn't like plush soft blankets, against his skin because they torture him. He has also had behavioral issues over the years that I thought was Oppositional Defiance as well, but I now realize this is all part of his new diagnosis. This Regulatory Disorder is caused by a problem with the central nervous system. I really hope that I didn't cause this with my Tylenol use during pregnancy. I guess as parents we always feel guilty, and always look for reasons for our children's medical issues!

No I haven't had her evaluated I'm afraid of stigmatism associated with it, right now her behavior could go either way she listens enough that she may be alright but will have a difficult time. I had thought about the sensory issues prior to the ODD possibilities because of other issues such as her discomfort with several types of clothing but this always seems to be worse in the morning and if she is tired but has that issue regardless.  In other words she doesn't tolerate tight around her rib cage, much of anything between her legs, leggings that aren't either full length or just above the knee, or tops that are too tight or high in the arm pit, not to mention socks with anything feeling irregular the same with shoes.  But to answer the other question YES this occurs everywhere, daycare, school, at home and regardless of who its with, grandma, mom, dad etc... She has been in kindergarden about 3 weeks now and has had more bad days than good and has been to the office for not listening or participating, and has lost several priveledges as well during the day.

Sorry didn't mean to sound so fierce it is my opinion that most children are simply normal with normal behaviors but we so often see the labels brandished around as an excuse for a child acting out, as they all do .and it also gives parents an excuse .

I t may also be a normal behavior in a child of this age, I never heard of OOD till a short while ago, it seems there are disorders for everything that worries a parent in a child .5 year old children are often angsey they do not do as they are told, they don't like some things and they do repeat some things ..I dont believe for one moment they have any problem .

Hi,  I have a son that has sensory integration disorder which at 5 could look like what you describe.  It is a developmental delay of the nervous system.  They give possible reasons a child might have sensory issues but there is nothing proven.  Yes, using drugs during pregnancy is one of the reasons they give.  I didn't.  In my opinion, who cares about the link.  I stopped asking why a long time ago-------  and just started focasing on what I needed to do to help my child.  And early intervention is really the key to that.

Dominosarah brings up a good question and that is if you have had her evaluated by any professionals.  This is really key.  My son was evaluated by an occupational therapist and diagnosed with sensory.  He sees an occupational therapist for treatment that includes direct work on his nervous system and behavioral therapy (IE: how to work on volatility, social skills, coping mechanisms------  when actually a child's obstinate reaction to something is actually their great discomfort in it)).  It has been beyond helpful-------  he is doing really great.

I would say to start by talking to your physician and getting a referrel to a psychologist and an occupational therapist (I'd really look into sensory issues).  If you live in the US, you are in luck-------- by law, you can ask to have your child evaluated by your local school system.  I'd go the whole route and have everything checked----- speech, psychological and occupational therapy.  If she is a 5, she will be in kindergarten soon enough-----  better to work on these things now through your school system than later.  They'll provide some servies of care and then give you some idea of what you need to reseach to do at home or if you will add to what they are doing with private therapy.

Also, if she conducts herself well in other envirments such as daycare or preschool--------  the issue swings back to home and needs to be addressed there.  Less likely to be developmental then and more to do with what goes on at home.  Changes there can help the situation.

There is no rhyme or reason to the kids we get.  Yes, your actions during pregnancy might have contributed to your child's issue-----  but there is no way of fully knowing and it really doesn't change anything.  I'd instead just search for an accurate diagnosis and look at what you can do to help her.

I wish you luck and am so happy you turned your life around and are doing well.  good luck
