Daughter's behavior- can't stop talking, won't pay listen to Teacher

My daughter is 6 years old and in first grade.  She is smart and does well academically, except since kindergarten her teachers have had problems with her not listening to them.  When asked to please be quiet and stop talking because she is disturbing the class from learning, she does not listen or stop talking.  This gets her into trouble with the teacher and gets disciplined and loses privledges.  She also gets a time out at home when we get the news!  This is very frustrating because she really tries hard to be good.  In fact, she cries and tells us it is so hard to be good.

What can we do to help her change her behavior and stop talking so much?

Is she bored?  Can she get moved to a gifted class? under what circumstances does she talk?  Many schools have videotapes etc.  I would first before just taking the word on this try to see a tape or sit in the back of the room, try not to be obvious and watch the class.

My son has the exact same experience. Few things:

- we took my son for an evaluation and learned he has mild ADHD--- talking to much and not listening are part of this -- so he needs to work harder than other children to not talk and to listen
- we started using positive reinforcement as first line for behavior correction ( he gets rewarded for doing the right things-- we make a big deal about his successes, and then he can earn reward points throughout the week if he gets positive behavior reports from school that he can cash in at the toy store)

He still talks too much, but he is trying very hard. And saome days he does not talk to much.

It feels much better for us to relate to him about what he does right as compared to punishment all the time:! It has made a big difference in his self esteem.
