Do I have to go to school?

by CarrieSLP, Dec 18, 2007 08:39PM
My daughter is a 3.11 year old who attends preschool three days a week from 8:30-2:00. She attended the same school last year for a two day program. Her teacher last year was very caring, gentle, soft spoken... Her teacher this year is a bit more gruff - not as gentle, a bit more strict. All but two students out of ten are the same kids as last year. Since the induction of this school year, everyday she asks if it's a school night. On nights that it is she repeatedly says that she doesn't want to go to school. She says she doesn't like school and she wants to stay home. I have never let her stay home (except when truly sick). There were three weeks this fall where she cried off and on all school day and refused to play with the other kids. Since then she comes up with different things she doesn't want to participate in - lately it's been story time and outside time. She loves these activities outside of school and used to like them in school.
I have tried reflective listnening ("I hear that you don't want to go, you wish you didn't have to go....")
I have tried to see if there was a child she doesn't like or a teacher - sometimes she says she likes everybody, other days she'll say that she doesn't have any friends. Her teachers say that now she is fine at school but several times a day asks for me and occasionally cries. Most of the time she  does refuse to go outside while at school.
She is an only child who gets very jealous when I give other children (i.e., my nephew) attention. At home she is strong willed, loves lots of attention, plays well with other children and easily talks to other people when with me.  I am considering switching schools but I wonder if a change would help or harm the situation. Next year is a five day program  - I'm worried that she won't be able to handle it.
Oh - P.S. As a child I cried and got sick to my stomach until about 9th grade. My father also did the same.  What can I do to help ease her anxiety - she has to go to school - what can I do to help her like it, or at least tolerate it.
Please Help!!!
